Will my life creation pass the scraping nail test? Will the nail bounce and click on the seams of my life and service? Plutarch, the 1st cen Greek Philosopher, writing about virtue, asks us to consider the nail. What about Drugs and the nail test? (Hang in there, as we will be doing the nail drug test too)
“To those who are building a stone wall or coping it matters not if they lay on any chance wood or common stone, or some tombstone that has fallen down, as bad workmen do, heaping and piling up pell-mell every kind of material; but those who have made some progress in virtue, whose life “has been wrought on a golden base,” like the foundation of some holy or royal building, undertake nothing carelessly, but lay and adjust everything by the line and level of reason, thinking the remark of Polycletus superlatively good, that that work is most excellent, where the model stands the test of the nail. (Like Horace’s factus ad unguem, because the sculptor tries its polish and the niceness of the joints by drawing his nail over the surface. Casaub. Pers. i. 64).”
– Plutarch. Plutarch’s Morals
Paul, a follower of Jesus, also from the the 1st cen wrote this;
1 Corinthians 3:11 (MSG)
Remember, there is only one foundation, the one already laid: Jesus Christ. 12 Take particular care in picking out your building materials. 13 Eventually there is going to be an inspection. If you use cheap or inferior materials, you’ll be found out. The inspection will be thorough and rigorous. You won’t get by with a thing. 14 If your work passes inspection, fine; 15 if it doesn’t, your part of the building will be torn out and started over. But you won’t be torn out; you’ll survive—but just barely.”
Yet we insist on building with poor materials. The better materials are Holiness, a Transformed mind, the fruit of the Spirit.
My country and province have legalized marijuana and opened stores to market the product this year. I read in the paper that little old Prince Edward Island, Canada, is seeing the per capita highest sales in Canada. This should market well with business and tech companies that wish to locate here, knowing our population has the highest volumes of dope sales in the country. They will think very highly of the enlightened job market potential here, i suspect.
Of course, this new cannabis law has brought out all the closet users seeking the easy purchases, no surprise there, right? I suppose it temped more than a few marijuana virgins into the waves for a first time frolic. But i think those who have purposefully lived a life of non drug use as a value have probably not changed their minds very much on the use of drugs.
I’ve heard lots of people talking about the benefits. Medically, i have no issues with cannabis. But i feel it should be supervised by a doctor, not self medicated. But those captivating labels in our cannabis stores tell us what each package of dope is good for, things like stress, well-being, relaxation. pain etc. It’s like trying out a new flavor of chips , cheese or coffee. It’s a cannabis Starbucks. I’m stressed so I need this one, I’m fatigued so maybe that one as well ….. and out we go with an armload, because it is all labeled to treat Every common ailment known to mankind. There is something there you need. Something for anything a human might suffer.
“Everyone should try it once!
More than a dozen people have said something like this in my presence in the last four months.
I probably would enjoy cannabis. It’s like i knew I would like sex, before I ever had the joy of sex.
However, I can’t adopt such a cavalier attitude toward drugs. Do as you please. But I’ve chosen to be a Jesus follower, which means I’ve turned the reigns over to his teachings. Therefore, I am not the virtue compass of my life, Jesus is and i am a follower of “The Way”. I freely chose this.
What does the bible say about drugs you ask?
Do we have to ask as a Christian? Why would we not know the teachings on this? It is blatantly obvious, and you might ask yourself whether or not your church is speaking the gospel into life’s real circumstances if you don’t know this stuff.
Any time you see the New Testament speak about witchcraft or sorcery, divination, magic or casting spells the Greek word Jesus, his Apostles and New Testament writers often used was φαρμακεία – Pharmakeía. Which is literally translated, “the used of drugs.”
With no coincidence this Greek word is the origin of our English word “Pharmacy” (French Pharmacie). The place we go to buy our drugs.
This word is a broad term in Greek used to describe those acts associated with witchcraft, idolatry, sorcery, soothsaying, magic (casing spells) and divination in ancient times. All these practices were evil and detestable to God and God’s people were to avoid them.
ALL the pagan religions and priests and officiates (and often participants) of pagan religions used drugs to bring altered states of consciousness. I wonder if the screaming babies burned alive by worshipers of Baal and Moloch were given drugs to numb them? (Those were the nations God destroyed – archaeology shows they sacrificed hundreds of thousands of babies to their worship. They were the Hitlers of their day. So you ask why God destroyed them?)
Pharmakeía is used to describe these various behaviors. Witchcraft, idolatry, sorcery, soothsaying, magic (casing spells) and divination.
(Hebrew word used for Sorcery in the Hebrew Old Testament is the same meaning – Kashaph- כִּשֵּׁף.)
- the use or the administering of drugs
- sorcery, magical arts, often found in connection with idolatry and fostered by it
- metaph. the deceptions and seductions of idolatry
Christians are asked to renew their mind, practice self control – ἐγκράτεια – egkrateia, (drugs alters that), to live a mindful life.
Self control – ἐγκράτεια – egkrateia in the sacred text means – the virtue of one who masters his desires and passions, especially his sensual appetites.
(Another greek word used for self control in the sacred text is σωφρονισμός sóphronismos. discipline, i.e. Self control — sound mind.)
Interesting that concept of self control in the French language is a perfect transliteration of the Greek word for self control (mastery of self, control of self)
- French has the idea of self mastery- maîtrise de soi, or gaining control of yourself. Master your self.
- Get possession or control of ourselves (possession de soi, contrôle de soi)
- To keep our self control. – rester maître de nous. A hard literal translation of this is “remain the master of yourself.”
Language is a powerful thing. The oppose of the use of drugs and altered rational and mental faculty is keeping the mastery of ourselves with cognitive faculty intact, seeking mindful reality, considering rational reality, versus the use of drugs for altered states of consciousness.
Give up your mind and you give up control of your life, mind and body.
Sexual acts, female prostitution as worship, androgyny, men dressing like women, Homosexual male prostitutes, and homosexual acts were also used as part of the worship of most ancient gods, and of course – seeking of altered consciousness by the use of drugs.
1 Kings 14:24 (NIV)
“There were even male shrine prostitutes in the land; the people engaged in all the detestable practices of the nations the Lord had driven out before the Israelites.
Emperor Nero, who dipped Christians in tar and set them on fire as human torches was married to a woman and a Man both. He was a bi sexual. We know there were temple prostitutes associated with the worship of Aphrodite and all of the fertility gods and cults.
There is nothing new under the sun. Our “new” Canadian cultural norms are simply ancient NEO- Paganism of 3000 – 4000 years ago. We reflect the identical debauchery of 4000 years ago. It’s not new it’s a rediscovery of the morals of paganism.
Christians and the ancient Israelite were to stay away from all sorcery and witchcraft (Pharmakeía – use of drugs) for another reason.
Those pagan practices used drugs as abortifacients and purgatives (to abort babies) poisoning (human sacrifice usually of infants), as criminals were often scarified to the gods to seek appeasement.”
Why am i not going to visit the Cannabis store to break my marijuana Virginity?
Because I am a Jesus follower. Jesus’ bible (the OT) and his inspired New Testament recording his words and teachings, is clear on how His disciples should view the use of drugs.
When the nail is dragged over the life I’ve built, i do not wish to hear the nail click over uneven, cracked or open joins I put shoddy work into.
I’m a Marijuana virgin… I hope to always be. Does not make me better than you. But it is my choice for a reason.
Joshua 24:24 (ESV)
“And the people said to Joshua, “The Lord our God we will serve, and his voice we will obey.”
